UNVEILS HEARTWRENCHING NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO, CHEMICAL HEART
Byron Bay singer-songwriter Kyle Lionhart has dropped a brand new single and video, Chemical Heart, ahead of the release of his highly anticipated new album, The Silence of You, on Friday, November 18.
Lionhart discusses the story behind the single, explaining that chasing a ‘successful’ music career became an obsession for him. He says, “Being away and constantly on the road chasing something – that hungry ghost of needing to be validated through music – was so powerful that I was willing to just ruin the rest of my life to get it.”
But then a timely realisation prompted Lionhart to pen the gently strummed Chemical Heart, which builds to a triumphant chorus.
“I hit this point at end of 2019 – after touring relentlessly for more than six years – when I realised that my family was gonna leave me and I hadn’t spoken to my friends in years, and it took its toll on my mental health,” he reflects. “I knew it was getting bad, but I ignored it to chase a ‘successful’ music career. And it worked, but almost every other facet of my life was suffering and falling to pieces.
“Then when I had to stop, because the pandemic forced me to, I realised everything was so turbulent. And I had to start working on myself and my relationships. It was kind of like, ‘Alright, I’m ready to get to work.’ I wrote the song Chemical Heart about that; it’s a song that was very much about everything I had just experienced.”
Chemical Heart is jubilant in overall tone, however, with percussive bongo and tambourine flourishes elevating those aha-moment choruses.

“Wake me up we’ll get this started/ Tell me who you really are/ I won’t give up on you, I promise/ My chemical heart is fighting it’s hardest.”
“I wrote Chemical Heart as a clear reminder to never let myself lose everything that’s important to me again. Because without them, what was it all for?”
Discussing the video, Lionhart says, “’I wanted it to be heartbreaking but relatable – other than the lyrics to the song, that was about all the direction I gave to Tas Wilson [Director/Videographer]. Twenty-four hours later he came to me with the Chemical Heart video pitch. I loved it. It was the perfect stereotypical way to portray what I wrote the song about. Shooting some of the scenes with Elodie Crowe (female actress) and my son Izaiah Lionhart (young boy) had me tearing up; they hit close to home realising that I was so close to it being my reality.”
Chemical Heart follows two preceding tastes from Lionhart’s upcoming second album, The Silence Of You: lead single Shelter, his first new music in almost two years, and the Double J-premiered Lighthouse, co-written with one of his best friends Paul Ruske, who lost his seven-year-old son to a brain tumour in 2017 – this song is an ode to their children.
