Vince Leigh’s Single Review: Sweet Baby Brown Eyes by Avalanche
Vince Leigh is the former drummer of Pseudo Echo, John Farnham and Tina Arena
Sweet Baby Brown Eyes is a rock and roll gut-punch with uncompromising performances all over it: a wailing blues rock vocal and guitars that drive like Mack trucks. This latest release from the Oz rock powerhouse Avalanche is the real deal, proof positive that the wild, unbridled spirit of Oz rock still lives on and will leave a lasting impression on those who dare to listen.
Lovers of AC/DC, The Angels, and Rose Tattoo, read on. This track, a cover of an Aussie classic by the legendary pub rock band of the 70s, Avalanche—fronted by Steven Campbell’s father, Adrian Campbell—reveals the scope of the band’s ambition, skill, and love of the rock tradition they inherited. As Steven Campbell says, ‘Avalanche released the original track back in 1976, and in their brief time together, they toured with AC/DC, appeared on Molly Meldrum’s Countdown, charted on the Billboard, and even got sampled by The Notorious B.I.G.’ The recording of Sweet Baby Brown Eyes was overseen by the Grammy-nominated ARIA award-winning producer Steve James, who has worked with some of the biggest names in rock, including the Sex Pistols, The Angels, Cold Chisel, and Airbourne.
This new release from Avalanche is their most polished and radio-friendly work to date, a testament to their musical chops and commitment to their craft. The previous EP, Second Hand Band, received widespread kudos and was praised by the likes of Rolling Stone Magazine and The Sydney Morning Herald, and received airplay on radio stations worldwide. The band, consisting of lead vocalist and bassist Steven Campbell, lead guitarist Veronica ‘V’ Campbell, drummer and rhythm machine Ryan Roma (aka ‘ADHD’), and rhythm guitarist Arthur Divis, has shared the stage with top acts such as Kingswood and The Poor.
Sweet Baby Brown Eyes is a magical rock and roll ride from the past into the future and Avalanche is a band that you need to keep your eye on, because they’re gonna blow you away.
