Vince Leigh’s Single Review: You On My Side by Anirban Jee

By Vince Leigh (Ex drummer of Pseudo Echo, John Farnham and Tina Arena)

Anirban Jee has worked with several big names, including Simon Cohen (Will.I.Am, Guy Sebastian, Vera Blue, Thelma Plum), Steve Peach (Icehouse, Marcia Hines, Stafford Brothers, The Voice Contestants, Choirboys, Fabrice (Milli Vanilli), Sophie Monk), Adrian Hannan (Delta Goodrem, Gabriella Cilmi, Taxi Ride, The Androids), Sven Tydeman (Josh Pyke, Tina Cousins, Candice Alley), and his songwriting skills have generated numerous radio plays spanning both commercial and community radio stations across Australia. You On My Side is his latest and fitting addition to Anirban’s catalogue, which already includes the tracks Mayday (2020), Move Out (2021), and Will Above My Wish. And after a string of various releases and awards, including Undecided featuring Judd Field and Deep Down featuring X-Factor songstress Mary Ann Van Der Horst, Anirban’s latest examines interpersonal relationships and emotional connection, with a focus on a significant interaction.

As Anirban has said about what’s behind the song, ‘You On My Side portrays the fulfilment and celebration of finally meeting the love of one’s life who believes in them and remains on their side through the ups and downs in life. It is a tribute to the journey of every person finding the love of their life.’ You On My Side is not strictly a dance track and is not necessarily at home under the R&B umbrella either; it is marked by a sustained pop sensibility, which makes it more of an R&B hybrid. It’s quite stripped back, with subtle groove modifications, cushioning synth and key lines and smatterings of vocal harmonies that all help sweeten the sonic backdrop without sapping the governing energy of the track. And this energy is divided between the lyric, obviously, and the melodic choicesmoderately cyclical in the chorus and more laidback in the verses. Anirban’s performance feels committed, and one can only be persuaded that he has indeed found the one.
