Live Review: Kip Moore – Nomad World Tour in Melbourne 2024

Rod Laver Arena is iconic, hosting everything from tennis tournaments to concerts that span the musical spectrum. As I entered the arena for Kip Moore’s ‘Nomad World Tour’, I felt a buzz – an electric mix of excitement and anticipation. The venue’s layout, with its excellent sightlines and acoustics, made it the ideal space for Moore’s blend of country, rock, and a dash of Americana.
Before the show kicked off, I was struck by the eclectic mix of fans gathered. You had the die-hard Kip Moore followers decked out in their best boots and denim, and then there were those who just came for a fun night out. The energy was infectious. Conversations floated through the air, from fans swapping favourite songs to debating the best type of whiskey (Spoiler: it’s whatever you have on hand).
Cheers erupted as the lights were dimmed. You could almost hear the collective heartbeat of the crowd, all anticipating the moment when Kip would take the stage.
When Kip finally emerged, the crowd exploded into thunderous applause and cheers. His signature gravelly voice ringing out, instantly captivating everyone in the arena. It’s one of those voices that makes you feel like you’re sitting around a campfire, sharing stories and sipping on something cold.
Dressed in a casual but stylish ensemble—think denim and a white singlet and boots —Moore exuded a warmth that felt like an invitation. He didn’t just perform; he connected. It was as if he was welcoming us into his living room for a private concert, and who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?
What I enjoy most about Kip Moore is his ability to weave poignant stories into his songs, it explains why he is a multi-platinum singer-songwriter. From songs like “Hey Pretty Girl” which captures the heartfelt longing and admiration for a loved one, blending romance with a touch of nostalgia to the upbeat anthem “Somethin’ ‘Bout A Truck,”, each track was a testament to his skill as a songwriter.
Moore’s voice filled the space, complemented by his dynamic band, who seamlessly brought his sound to life. The crowd responded enthusiastically, singing and swaying to the infectious rhythm, creating a sense of camaraderie defining the night. Moore’s energy was contagious. He leaped around the stage, engaging with the audience, and ensuring we felt part of the experience.
His bandmates were equally impressive, delivering tight, powerful harmonies and killer instrumentals. I especially loved the guitar solos, which added a rock edge to his country roots. They played seamlessly together, creating a sound that filled the arena with warmth vibrancy and high energy, complementing Moore’s vocals beautifully.
What truly stood out during the concert was Moore’s knack for crowd interaction. He frequently invited us to sing, turning the arena into one giant karaoke session. The entire arena was belting out the lyrics with such fervour that you’d think we were all part of a massive, impromptu choir. It was a beautiful moment of unity, showing how music can bring people together, regardless of background or age.
The setlist was a well-crafted mix of hits and fan favourites, showcasing Moore’s versatility as an artist. Songs like “Beer Money” and “Somethin’ ‘Bout a Truck” had the crowd dancing and singing along with infectious enthusiasm.
Visually, the performance was captivating. Subtle, yet vibrant lighting shifted throughout the night, enhancing the mood of each song. When the upbeat tracks played, vibrant colours flooded the stage, while softer songs were accompanied by warm, gentle hues. This attention to detail contributed to the overall immersive experience.
It was an unforgettable moment when Kip Moore invited James Johnston and Sons of the East to join him on stage for a rendition of “Take a Load Off Annie.” The synergy between the artists created an electric atmosphere, blending their unique styles into an upbeat, yet soulful tribute that resonated deeply with the crowd. As they harmonised together, the warmth of their voices filled the venue. It was a perfect celebration of talent and friendship.
Kip returned for an encore, and we all knew what was coming: “Somethin ‘Bout A Truck’. The audience sang along at the top of their lungs, in one of those moments that felt like pure magic. The connection between Moore and the crowd was palpable, making it clear that we weren’t just there as spectators; we were all part of the experience. As the band dispersed the stage, Kip jumped onto the floor to sign autographs; people’s hats, phones, and anything that could be offered.
This concert was not just a showcase of his musical talent; it was a celebration of life, love, and the human experience. His ability to blend heartfelt storytelling with high-energy performances is truly a gift.
Support Act 2 – Sons of the East
Fresh from their successful tour of North America, the Australian trio Sons of the East delivered an infectious performance with a blend of folk, rock and pop that resonated deeply with dedicated fans and newcomers alike.
As the band walked on stage, it was clear that they were ready to create an unforgettable, highly energetic experience, they were certainly pumped. The trio is composed of founding members Nic Johnston, Dan Wallage and Jack Rollins, each bring unique energy that complements their harmonious sound. Their commitment to musicianship shone through, as they seamlessly transitioned between instruments—acoustic guitars, banjos, and even a keyboard—all while maintaining an engaging stage presence.
Sons of the East delivered an electrifying performance that brought their songs “What I Do,” “On My Way,” and “Wish I Knew” to life in a captivating way. The setting allowed the band to connect deeply with the audience, especially during “What I Do,” where the emotional weight of the lyrics resonated powerfully. “On My Way” transformed the atmosphere, filling the venue with vibrant energy as fans sang along, celebrating the spirit of adventure and new beginnings. Crowd pleaser song “Wish I Knew,” where the band’s harmonies soared, it was evident that Sons of the East thrive in live settings, their sound only amplified by the enthusiastic audience.
The band’s chemistry was noticeable, with each member clearly enjoying their time on stage. They frequently exchanged smiles amongst their fellow band members. This camaraderie extended to the audience, as they encouraged sing-alongs and the crowd applauding with enthusiasm after each song.
The Sons of the East delivered a stellar performance at Rod Laver Arena, one that highlighted their incredible musical talent and ability to connect with an audience. Their blend of infectious melodies, emotional lyrics, and engaging stage presence definitely won over new fans.
Support Act 1 – James Johnston
James Johnston sparked the evening at Rod Laver Arena, enchanting and invigorating the audience with his distinct sound and magnetic presence. The Australian singer-songwriter, who in 2009 came third in the seventh season of Australian Idol, and then in 2014 made the top 24 of the sixth season of The X Factor.
As Johnston stepped onto the stage, he kicked into gear showcasing his rich, emotive vocals and laid the groundwork for the evening’s journey.
Johnston’s song-writing shines through not just in his lyrics but also in his ability to connect with the audience.
The setlist was a well-crafted blend of fan favourites and new material, showcasing the evolution of Johnston’s artistry. Tracks like “Blame” resonated deeply, with its infectious rhythm and relatable themes of love and heartbreak. The audience sang along, their voices blending harmoniously with Johnston’s as if they were part of the song itself.
Johnston’s energy intensified as he expertly shifted gears with tracks like “Raised Like That,” a catchy, upbeat anthem that had the crowd dancing and clapping along. Raised Like That’ was the fastest-ever debut single by an Australian country singer to reach one million streams and I can see why, definitely got me moving.
James Johnston’s performance at Rod Laver Arena was definitely captivating and he took the place apart vocally as soon as he stepped on stage, interacting with the crowd, having them singing and engaging, making it an unforgettable experience for everyone.
