Margaret Court Arena is no stranger to big events, but it was particularly well-suited for Steel Panther’s flamboyant brand of entertainment. With its spacious layout and excellent acoustics, the arena felt like the perfect venue for the band to unleash their signature blend of music and mayhem.
For those who were looking for a concert that was equal parts rock and roll and stand-up comedy, then Steel Panther’s show in Melbourne encompassed all this and more. Picture this: the magnificent Margaret Court Arena with a sea of fans, all eagerly anticipating a night of high-octane music and cheeky antics.
As the crowd trickled in, it was clear that the fans were ready for a night of epicness. People of all ages donned their best glam-rock outfits—think leopard print, leather, and enough sequins/studs to make a disco ball feel underdressed. I spotted one brave soul in a spandex catsuit that could’ve easily doubled as a parachute in an emergency. Talk about commitment!
Steel Panther took the stage with all the flair of rock legends, immediately launching into their hit “Eyes of a Panther”. The band, consisting of the charismatic Michael Starr (lead vocals), the guitar wizard Russ “Satchel” Parrish, the versatile maestro Joe (Spyder) Lester and the powerhouse drummer Darren ‘Stix Zadinia’ Leader, came to play—and they did not hold back. Their musicianship is undeniably impressive, with solos that could make even the most seasoned guitarists weep with envy. But what sets Steel Panther apart is their ability to combine that talent with humour that often flirts with the outrageous. It’s like if Spinal Tap had a love child with Poison, and that child decided to go on an extended bender in Las Vegas.
The moment the band hit the stage, it was clear we were in for a wild ride. With hair higher than the city’s skyline and outfits that could blind an unsuspecting bystander, these guys brought the glam metal vibe back in a way that felt both nostalgic and hilariously over-the-top. They kicked off the night with a bang, launching into classic hits that had everyone singing along—even those who couldn’t remember the last time they wore spandex!
But let’s talk about the comedy—Steel Panther has a knack for mixing in some seriously funny banter. Between songs, lead singer Michael Starr delivered punchlines that made the crowd howl with laughter. Seriously, if this band ever decides to quit music (which, let’s be real, they won’t), they could easily fill stadiums with their stand-up routines. I mean, who else could make a three-minute riff on the struggles of life in the modern world sound like Shakespearean poetry?
The crowd was electric, with fans of all ages—from die-hard metalheads to those who just came for a good laugh. And let’s not forget the epic crowd participation! At one point, they had half the audience chanting lyrics while the other half awkwardly tried to follow. Steel Panther, true to their rock ‘n’ roll spirit, cranked up the wildness by inviting some brave (and equally spirited) women from the audience onto the stage. Amidst cheers and infectious laughter, things quickly escalated, with a few of the ladies fully embracing the moment and shedding a layer or two, much to the crowd’s delight. The band, notorious for their cheeky antics, played along with grins and guitar riffs, making the whole scene feel like a page right out of an ’80s rock-and-roll fantasy. It was the perfect blend of spontaneity, comedy, and classic Steel Panther chaos!
As the night went on, Steel Panther didn’t just rock; they connected. Their ability to poke fun at themselves and the everyday life, created a sense of camaraderie among the audience. We were all in on the joke, and by the end, it felt like one big, weird family reunion—if your family was made up of leather-clad rock stars and you had an unhealthy obsession with hairspray. With razor-sharp wit and over-the-top humour, they don’t hold back on jokes, often poking fun at themselves, the glam metal genre, and even the crowd in a way that feels like a playful roast. Their natural comedic timing and energy make every show feel unique and full of laughter, as they seamlessly mix music with a rock ‘n’ roll comedy experience that fans can’t get enough of.
They kept things so unfiltered that it felt like we’d been transported straight back to the wildest ‘80s rock party. It was like watching a glam metal soap opera unfold live, with spandex
While the humour and theatrics are a significant part of Steel Panther’s appeal, let’s not forget the music! They performed a solid setlist featuring fan favourites like “Friends with Benefits”, “Party All Day” and “Asian Hooker.” Each song was infused with a level of energy that could only be matched by an espresso-fuelled squirrel.
As the concert drew to a close, Steel Panther left the stage to a deafening roar of applause, but not before promising us an encore that would blow our minds. And blow our minds they did! Returning to the stage, they treated us to their mega hit “Gloryhole” that had everyone singing and laughing until we were all breathless.
When they finally wrapped up, it was clear that the concert was more than just a series of songs; it was a celebration of music, laughter, and the unapologetic joy of living in the moment. As we filed out of the arena, still buzzing from the experience, I overheard someone say, “I came for the music, but I stayed for the comedy,” and honestly, that sums it all up perfectly.
The Steel Panther’s concert was a riotous blend of stellar musicianship and gut-busting humour. It was a night that left your cheeks hurting from laughing and your ears ringing from some serious guitar riffs. Whether you’re a long-time fan or just someone looking for a night of entertainment, Steel Panther delivers a show that is both hilarious and musically impressive. So, if you see them rolling into town again, grab your spandex, slap on some eyeliner, and prepare for a night of glam rock madness. You won’t regret it—just maybe keep a spare hair spray can handy! 🎸✨
Rock on, Steel Panther! You’ve officially made your mark on the Melbourne music scene—and my funny bone! 🎸✨

The setlist was carefully curated which included ‘I am John 5’, also an instrumental version of ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ by Queen, offering a blend of his original work and nods to his diverse influences, catering to both long-time fans and newcomers alike.
He genuinely seemed to enjoy himself, encouraging the crowd to get involved and have a great time. Alejandro Mercado accompanied him on drums, delivering an impressive and tight performance that perfectly complemented his unique style.
For guitar enthusiasts in the audience, John 5’s playing was an absolute treat. He made complex passages look deceptively easy, balancing speed with flawless precision and a seemingly endless well of creativity. His solos weren’t just technically impressive—they were musically enriching, showing his deep understanding of melody, tone, and dynamics.
