Single Review: Overrated by TIA

By Vince Leigh (Pseudo Echo, John Farnham, Tina Arena)

The opening lyric to TIA’s latest release Overrated sets out the theme the Melbourne-based singer-songwriter is exploring in a concise and inventive way: ‘I shoot for love but can’t connect / Heart on my sleeve I hold breath / A lonely Cinder with no dress / I guess my fairy tale’s a mess’.

Utilising a combination of direct language with a kind of world-weariness is reflective of the change in the young music artist’s style. The fifth single for the independent music artist, Overrated is a splendid amalgamation of soulful maturity with less overt pop. All the hit points are present—a hooky group of individual melodic parts, a confident and emotionally charged vocal performance—yet the lyric’s openness together with the sophistication of the production create a hybrid accessible pop that goes beyond the typical expectations of the genre.

TIA has made some remarkable gains recently, including across-the-board play with her tracks, including features and adds on Triple J, Stingray Music & Mood Media In-Store Playlisting across multiple playlists, Teen Breathe Magazine, 4ZZZ, Southern Cross Austereo SEA 90.9 and NOVA Entertainment’s Coles Radio, to name a few.

A Triple J Unearthed finalist, the rising indie-pop sensation has released a track that reveals the growth of her songwriting as well as her vocal skill. As TIA says about her latest release, ‘This song is about whether falling in love in your teenage years is worth the hype or if it is overrated. I wrote this to show the cycle that goes through our minds when you are always the single friend, and I hope other people can relate.’

Overrated is instantly identifiable, utilising contemporary pop while colouring it with a good measure of finesse. Although the theme is teenage love, the subject matter is undoubtedly universal. As TIA says about what she hopes to achieve through her music, ‘I want people to feel that what they are going through is normal. I want my music and lyrics to be an escape for people.’

When TIA had the opportunity to tour with Tones & I in Tone’s backing choir recently, it cemented her belief that performing and writing songs was what she was meant to do. That confidence is evident on Overrated.
