Single Review: What Kind of Man by Tiali

By Sheldon Ang

Tiali has released a sneak preview of her upcoming debut EP, The Pleasure Pit.

The single What Kind of Man meanders through the “multitude of issues that women face everyday in society”, says the Australian artist.

Her message is viscerally crafted, from the vocal rage to the bridled grunge of Indie Rock. Tiali’s alluring delivery with a mysterious grit and guitar at the intro keep the listeners on edge, with an anticipation of an explosive outpour. The undulating emotions and projection are palpable as the intensity builds to a spontaneous combustion.

“Victim blaming, slut shaming, rape culture, impossible and contradictory beauty standards, DV, unwanted attention and sexualisation, assault, misogyny, even internalised misogyny from us women. I hate to admit it, but for so long I didn’t realise I had been conditioned to certain ways of thinking. I accepted these behaviours and lack of respect for women as normal…” Tiali explains.

The lead up to the climax and the crescendo is a ravenous one-two combination as the intensity flourishes. The transition ignites into an imaginative spectacular of the Australian artist bursting onto the big stage with blinding lights, thanks to the energetic, sultry and savvy vocals and heavy guitar riff.

Delivering with honesty is the lifeline of musicians; the rage and frustration are real with Tiali. Afterall, a track with a dark content needs to be performed with a certain je ne sais quoi.

Tiali adds, “Since learning more about feminism, I barely recognise that person.  It seems so obvious to me now that we should all be constantly learning, evolving and working towards a safer and more equal collective, not just for women, but for POC, LGBTQIA+ and people with disabilities.”

The fade out brings some sonic relive, ending with “He’s just your typical man. ”

What Kind of Man sits on a universal language of music with a masterful personification of the message.  The track is an epitome of indie rock with an Alanis Morrissette-esque salutation.

The Pleasure Pit is filled with soulful, dreamy, addictive, grungy and psychedelic tracks.  We got a taste, and we can’t wait for its release on July 28, available through Sony Music Australia and all major streaming platforms.
