Vince Leigh’s Single Review: Complicated by Rachael Coltrona

Emerging singer-songwriter Rachael Coltrona aims for the summit with her debut single, Complicated. This contemporary dance-infused pop track delves deep into the complexity of relationships and communication breakdowns while revealing Rachael’s vocal capabilities. Rachael’s new release is a decently crafted dance-tinged contemporary pop song with a production job that’s clean and pristine and leaves plenty of room for highlighting the track’s true governing energy force, which is, of course, the vocal performance.
The track builds from a subtly pulsed verse and pre-chorus to a fully fleshed chorus hook, all augmenting a lyric that’s sure to resonate with many. There are a few subtle retro elements at play here, but overall, Complicated eschews blatant nostalgia for a hybrid that’s as modern as the word Rachael uses to describe the lyric’s background. As Rachael says about the inspiration behind the track, ‘Complicated is about a song about being in a situationship (a romantic or sexual relationship that is not considered to be formal or established) and about releasing and maintaining control of your situation, before completely falling for someone who you know is not right for you. The inspiration came from personal experience with someone who was flirting with the idea of keeping me around while not really committing to anything. Kind of going nowhere fast but not wanting to accept it. Relationships are complicated after all!’
Rachael has transitioned from her roots in musical theatre, showcasing her skills as a 2017 WAAPA graduate. Rachael’s accolades include a performance in HAMA’s rendition of Legally Blonde and her mezzo-soprano voice, enticing audiences when she featured in the Joondalup Symphony Orchestra’s cherished Christmas Carol events. After releasing her cover of John Madara and David White’s You Don’t Own Me in late 2022, Rachael is now set to launch her career with the dynamic pop blast of Complicated.
