Single Review: 3 Days Gone by Electric Mary

By Drummer Vince Leigh (Pseudo Echo, John Farnham and Tina Arena)

Rock N’ Load Magazine EU has said that Electric Mary is ‘globally renowned for their explosive, mind-bending live performances,’ and Rocktopia U.K. has called the group ‘compelling, authentic, and absolutely vital.’ There’s no doubt that Europe has a ceaseless appetite for good old-fashioned hard rock, but I think our OS neighbours are also drawn to something unique and charismatic about Australian versions of the genre.

The most recent track from this iconic ARIA charting band is a furious bombardment of classic rock with the band’s distinctive blend of twin guitar muscle, blues-inspired rock vocals, and typically uncompromising rhythmic menace. As the band says about the new single, ‘The dreaded covid hit all of us smack bang in the face we were all blindsided, and it took its toll on everyone and everything, especially the music industry.

3 Days Gone tells just one of the tales that we struggled through to keep things on track the way it used to taste.’ After a blistering start made up of a circuitous guitar riff and a super-charged rhythm, a verse reveals the narrative explored, a voyage into a realm of darkness and mystery, unashamedly raw, vivid, and just how we like our rock lyric; ambiguous and suggestive. This section precedes a chorus with a neat resolution and a melodic counterpoint that functions as an appealing dynamic. Having shared the stage with such esteemed artists as Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Alice Cooper, and Glenn Hughes, to name a few, as well as showcasing at Experience PRS for PRS Guitars in Stevensville, Maryland alongside the likes of Carlos Santana, Dweezil Zappa and Buddy Guy, the band continues to attract massive numbers to their shows.

The sound that Rusty, Pete, Alex, Brett, and Spyda create draws heavily from rock and blues music’s rich past and then reimagined into an alternative accessible rock blend. 3 Days Gone is indicative of the band’s continued upward trajectory in their notable history.
