TEENAGE JOANS ANNOUNCE DEBUT ALBUM THE ROT THAT GROWS INSIDE MY CHEST
Adelaide indie rock duo Teenage Joans achieve confection perfection today with their brand new single Candy Apple alongside the announcement of their debut album The Rot That Grows Inside My Chest, due out on Friday 13 October via Domestic La La.
Following on from the release of the anthemic single Superglue earlier this year, Candy Apple may be sonically sweet – but the track also brandishes a searingly intimate narrative.
Of their new single the band share: “Candy Apple was our first introduction into writing songs with a way more honest and personal lyric style. When we wrote it we kind of knew it would point us in a new direction for this new era, as we think it definitely shows our maturity. We loved the metaphor of “falling in love with a candy apple”, the way something so sweet and beautiful can rot really easily, and we took that into both the aesthetic side of the album when we were making the visuals, and the thematic side of the album too.”
Equally inspired by the golden era of punk a la Blink-182 and Paramore as much as they are by fellow modern Aussies Waax, Camp Cope and Tired Lion, Teenage Joans take their whimsical yet hard-hitting nostalgia to even greater heights as they approach the release of their debut full length The Rot That Grows Inside My Chest.
Embracing darkness, vulnerability and authenticity with more vigor than ever before, the duo’s debut album is definitely not the release most will expect. Never ones to do things “by the book”, The Rot That Grows Inside My Chest proudly swells between pop punk anthems, mosh pit-ready breakdowns and future karaoke classics; all while remaining searingly relatable and showcasing every inch of the Teenage Joans sonic psyche that has galvanized throughout the pair’s storied career.
Teaming up with producer Jarred Nettle and drawing inspiration from the likes of 5 Seconds Of Summer and Camp Cope, Teenage Joans honor their past will gazing firmly forward throughout The Rot That Grows Inside My Chest. With 13 tracks lying in wait, balanced with tracks that cohesively thread while straddling light, shade and everything in between, The Rot That Grows Inside My Chest dazzles in its dichotomies, from the soaring softness of Moneymoneymoney to the pulsating 5 Things I Can Taste.
“This is Teenage Joans in its purest form,” shares Blakers, pointing out that “there’s no co-writes on this album, it’s all us”.
“Our music has evolved so much, and all of our different inspirations have come together into this one little baby – our little baby,” adds Borg.
Forming in 2018 as literal teenagers, Teenage Joans, aka Cahli Blakers and Tahlia Borg, would go on to nab the triple j Unearthed High crown in 2020 while also insatiably charming audiences around the country over the years with their self-professed “juice-box punk-pop” sonic stylings. Having previously shared stages with the likes of Amy Shark, Violent Soho, Ball Park Music, The Chats and many more, the duo have also continued to establish themselves as firm festival faves, with appearances at Spin Off, Yours & Ours, UNIFY Gathering and beyond.
From their debut EP, 2021’s Taste Of Me which saw the group blitz through and win seven South Australian Music Awards, to their blazing 2022single Terrible, Teenage Joans have consistently woven musical magic via their indie-pop-punk collision packed full of fun and engaging finesse. And while 2022 closed out with a bang via a headline tour around the country, 2023 is already shaping up to be Teenage Joans‘ biggest and brightest yet, with recent appearances at Groovin The Moo alongside Alt-J, Amy Shark, Ball Park Music and Nothing But Thieves, three SXSW showcases, and a headline appearance at Adelaide’s UNIFY Off The Record firmly under their belts.
Teenage Joans will appear at the Sly Withers’ curated SIDEFEST 2023 later this month, Grapevine Gathering across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia in October, and will also appear alongside The Chats supporting Foo Fighters in Perth and Melbourne this November.
